Three things that get gardening invoices paid faster
- 1Put plants, mulch and materials on their own lines with quantities, separate from labour, so the client can see what was supplied.
- 2Describe the visit by task rather than by hours: "pruned roses and hedges, weeded beds, mulched front garden".
- 3For ongoing maintenance, agree a visit frequency in writing and invoice monthly with one dated line per visit.
What has to be on the invoice
If you are registered for GST, the ATO expects seven things on a tax invoice before your client can claim the GST back. Miss one and the invoice can be knocked back, which is how a 14-day invoice quietly becomes a 60-day one.
- 1The words "Tax Invoice", so the document identifies itself
- 2Your business name, as it is registered
- 3Your ABN, all 11 digits
- 4The date you issued it
- 5A description of what you supplied, itemised
- 6The GST amount, or a statement that the total includes GST
- 7The total amount payable
Invoices of $1,000 or more need one extra field: the buyer’s identity or ABN. If you are not registered for GST, you must not charge GST and must not call the document a tax invoice; untick the GST box above and it becomes a plain invoice.
General information only, not tax advice. Check your own circumstances with the ATO or your accountant.
Questions
Do gardeners charge GST on plants and materials?
If you are registered for GST, GST applies to the whole invoice, including plants and mulch you supplied. If you are not registered, no GST is charged on any of it. Either way, list materials on their own lines so the client can see what was supplied.
Should I charge for the quote visit?
Most gardeners quote small jobs free and charge a consultation for garden redesigns or large plantings. If you charge for the visit, put it on the invoice as its own line and say whether it is credited against the job.
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes. Build the invoice and download the PDF without creating an account, entering a card or getting a watermark. You only need a free account if you want Free Invoice App to email the invoice, take card payments or chase it when it goes overdue.
Is the invoice ATO-compliant?
It follows the ATO tax invoice format: the words "Tax Invoice", your business name and ABN, the issue date, an itemised description of what you supplied, the GST amount and the total payable. Tick the GST box only if you are registered for GST; leave it off and the document is issued as a plain invoice with no GST.
